in the trees

in the backseat of his car
i'm drinking from a bottle
i can't read the label
it's so dark back here.
but it burns my heart.
like sulfur.
and your lips
they taste like menthol.
the tire kisses the ground
and i fly out of the car.
connecting with the concrete,
you disappear in the trees.
my soul is on her knees.
he knows that he's asleep.
branches stuck in his palms,
i cauterize his wounds.
and i am entombed
in your childhood room.
plastic stars above my head,
you're under the bed.

fragmentary

i'm searching for the pieces
to build those necessary feelings that we know nothing about
we speak: it's like emotion is nowhere in us
it's like we're not even a part of us
and we dance: it's like our movement does nothing to us
it's like we're not even a part of us
so disconnected, fragmentary just like it should be
i'm touching incompletely
patterns i don't recognize today
up outside our misshapen design i find bottles filled with something terrible
but i drink it anyway i wanna wake up so hungover that i can't leave my bed or open my eyes i wasn't going to anyway
